Overview of Serengeti Under Canvas

This mobile tented camp follows vast herds as they migrate across the plains named Siringitu in Maasai, which means ‘the place where the land moves on forever’. Located in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, one of the earth’s last natural migration corridors and oldest ecosystems, the climate, vegetation and fauna have remained almost unchanged for a million years. The natural instinct that drives the annual migration of more than a million wildebeest and zebra is so powerful that neither drought nor crocodile-infested rivers can halt them.

Witness this spectacle on a luxurious safari in the care of your personal butler and specialist guides. Daily game drives bring you alongside the majesty and drama unfolding on the savannah. Guided nature walks offer a more intimate view of the wilderness while cultural tours to local Maasai villages are highly recommended. Witnessing the great migration across the Serengeti Plains is a once-in-a-lifetime experience; Serengeti Under Canvas provides you with front-row seats.

      Tent

The camp has eight canvas tents, each erected to ensure privacy and uninterrupted views. Your walk-in tent has a lofty ‘ceiling’ and elegant, functional furnishings. Designed to keep insects out but allow in refreshing breezes and the charming sounds of birdlife, the tents are truly comfortable.

A little verandah with canvas chairs provides you with a private observation post to enjoy passing wildlife. Your en suite bathroom features a hot water bucket shower, vanity dressing table and private WC. Lamps fill the tent with soft light at night, creating a restful, romantic ambience.

      General Facilities

A mobile tented camp is essentially a comfortable, ‘relocate-able’ base from which to witness the Great Migration and explore the savannah. The thrilling sense of adventure is heightened around the evening fire, as you share anecdotes, serenaded by the sounds of the wild and awed by the sky-full of stars above you.

Expect simple, stylish accommodation in romantic canvas tents, plush couches in the sitting tent and cool cocktails served in the heat of the day. Your personal butler ensures that you have everything you need throughout your safari.

Serengeti Under Canvas makes a special effort to welcome children. On arrival, each child receives a bag containing a game logbook, crayons, pencils and a pawprint tattoo. There is a personalised welcome note for every child, and those under three get an African-themed soft toy as well. When available, booking an exclusive use safari vehicle means that game drives can be tailored for the shorter attention span of little ones, leaving and coming back to the lodge at any time. Childminders can be arranged during game drives and at mealtimes.

      Dining

Your butler wakes you with tea, coffee and homemade biscuits and sees you off on the early morning game drive. You return to a hearty breakfast feast of hot and cold dishes. Perhaps a hot bucket shower or a nap will carry you through to the casual light lunch served in the sitting tent.

The afternoon is spent relaxing in camp, watching the passing wildlife or leisurely reading over a glass of chilled wine, nibbling on snacks. A guided walk helps you build an appetite for the delicious afternoon tea before your evening game drive. Return to cool cocktails around the campfire and a sumptuous dinner of Pan-African cuisine served in the dining tent on a table dressed with crystal, silverware and crisp linen.

Romantic alfresco dinners for two can be arranged on request.

To wake up with 100s of wildebeest around camp was a complete highlight! It's also so true to the nature of safari - perfect for the migration with some of the best guides around. A firm favourite!

The showers were very nice, food was delicious, the tents were comfy. We had issues with personnel leaving our tents slightly open when they came for turndown, for example, and a lot of bugs came in. Every night was a bug-hunting safari. In the end it was part of the experience but I still have a couple of bites that remind me :). Our guides were very cool: we had a new guide (Zakia) who had just arrived and was very nervous but even though she didn’t have as much experience, her tracking and spotting skills were impressive as is the knowledge of every single living thing there is to find. We saw as many elephant, giraffe, cats, foxes, zebra as we could imagine. Staying around a big group of elephants while they played and ate was as beautiful as having lunch under an acacia in the middle of the Migration. I insist that anyone who is lucky enough to experience this will seriously question his/her impact on the environment in general (at least, I have).

I simply loved the &Beyond concept.. I have never stayed anywhere were the service and ambiance was made so personal… it was unbelievable., both at Ngorogoro and Serengeti. Everything was beautiful, the accommodations, the food, the surroundings. And the game drives could not have been better.. I really came back in love with both.

My wife and I spent 3 nights at this property. I cannot phantom the logistics required to run such an operation. The food, accommodations and service were all above our expectations. The wildlife is abundant but a little noisy while they graze around your tent so if you’re a light sleeper I would recommend ear plugs. Keep in mind you are in the bush and do need to be aware of the animals around you. The staff however does take every precaution to ensure your safety. It is quite the view to wake up as your butler delivers tea first thing in the morning and as you look out you see hundreds of animals grazing just outside the entrance to your tent. Your every need is accommodated by a very friendly staff that takes great pride in providing you with an experience you will never forget. The guides are also very knowledgeable about the habitat and animals that are abundant in the area. Our guide was able to find every animal we had requested to see and how he did that in such a large expanse of land I will never know. The most memorable experience was performed to perfection. The entire kitchen staff and kitchen was resurrected in the middle of nowhere providing us with a superb lunch along the river. My hat is off to the staff and &beyond that can make this dream a reality.

The flight from Lake Manyara to the Serengeti was good. No problems with timing etc. Our driver, Andrew, was waiting there for us with the customary hot drinks and biscuits. Andrew took us to the Mara River, where after a short time thousands of wildebeest crossed the river in front of us. A pretty good start to our visit to the Serengeti! We arrived at the camp to welcome drinks and cold towels, which was great. The tents and the camp was well positioned and laid out. The locations, scenery and the animals at night easily compensated for any issues with the tents. All staff, including our butler Alex, were good. The driver Andrew was great, he was able to enable us to see virtually all that needed to be seen – prides of lions (and cubs, hyenas, rhinoceros, giraffes, gazelle giving birth, leopards mating, elephants, wildebeest) etc. All really fantastic. Lunch on a hill overlooking the Mara River, sundowners amongst the rocks. He was great. The ride back to Kogatende airstrip was great, saw the leopards mating on the way! Apart from the wildebeest getting onto the strip and causing the plane to have another go at landing there, all was great.

Qe had the best time in the bush and really enjoyed the camp staff – Mussa, Mohammed and the whole team. A very memorable experience enhanced particularly by our ranger, Mohammed. The luxury tents were indeed luxurious and I certainly didn’t feel like I was camping!

Serengeti Under Canvas – You were right! I can’t say enough good things about the entire operation of CC Africa and especially the folks at Camp 2 (our camp). I can’t imagine being around a better group, in such an idealic setting and living is such a luxurious surrounding. The camp manager, Mussa, was superb. Our ranger/guide, Paul Panga was a delight to be around. The other guides, John and Mohammed who each joined Paul for a half day were very nice as well. Linda left her binoculars ( an excellent pair she borrowed from her dad) in the truck when we left to go to Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. I am going to send a letter to CC Africa about this experience (which I will copy you on) which ended with the binoculars being in our possession when we left Tanzania and confirmed our previous thoughts about CC Africa. We look forward to traveling with them again, including another stay with Serengeti Under Canvas in January – February when they are in the South Serengeti and the Gnu are giving birth.
